YOU | BODY SCANNING

Design School Kolding

Module YOU | Function, Form, and Aesthetics
- Using body scan for inclusion and diversity

The aim of the course is for the student to acquire knowledge, skills and competences in relation to how a designer can create value based on the needs of the user.

In the course, the student is introduced to theory and methods that support how to relate to the needs of others, and how user involvement can have an impact on inclusion, diversity and the sustainability of a design. In addition, research and practice within both universal and adaptive design are introduced.

The student must apply selected user involvement methods in order to acquire knowledge about a given user's usage practices and needs, and based on analysis translate core insights into form and material studies. The design solution is completed through aesthetic approaches informed by the student's knowledge of colours, materials etc. The project is concluded through a validation/perspectivation of the design's relevance with the involvement of the user.

Length: 8 weeks course module

Collaborators: The Danish association of Youth With Disabilities (SUMH)

Before course, students prepare by reading course description and learning goals and the articles on Universal Design and Human Centred Design.

This course takes the students through Universal Design and Human-Centred Design working with their end users by using body scanning and digital fashion design tools to create  design solutions that are value based on the needs of the user and is completed through aesthetic approaches informed by the student's knowledge of colours, materials etc.

Content:
The course begins with an introduction to Universal Design and Human-Centred Design, focusing on foundational principles and concepts. This is followed by introduction to the draping techniques of Kinetic Garment followed by students draping together two-by-two.

Subsequently follows a lecture on Human-Centred Design and workshop consisting specific exercises related to the students’ projects. Students are then introduced to wardrobe study methods and FEA model. In group exercises, students develop, prepare, and conduct wardrobe studies and interviews, applying theories and methods from the course.

The course then covers body scanning apps, with talk on measuring standing and seated positions. Students practice working with 3D body scanning and taking physical measurements, and then body scan their collaborators.

The course progresses with students importing body scans into CLO3D. They then dive into sketching and prototyping process, both analogically and digitally.

In the end, students participate in validation and fitting sessions with end users, refining their designs based on feedback. The project is concluded through reflection and survey, building bridge to future use and course modules.
