ME | VIRTUAL PROTOTYPING

University of Ljubljana, NTF

Module ME | Introduction to Virtual Prototyping
Personal space within Physical and Virtual

The module will guide students through the process of developing a virtual garment inspired by an A-line dress. It will teach them four different techniques of adding volume to a dress and encourage them to be creative with the newly gained skills. Students will learn how to create their own print and use its rapport in the virtual garment.

The process starts and ends manually, to better understand the advantages offered by the digital. The module demonstrates the sustainable side of digital garment development with reduced time and material waste.

The module unlocks the various benefits of digital technology – from design creativity to reduction of development costs and prototype development time. It is crucial for the new generation of textile and fashion students to enter the fashion industry with digital knowledge and skills. Learning new digital fashion vocabulary will empower students and increase their communication which leads to bigger creativity and employability

At the University of Ljubljana, we undertook this module with First-year Fashion and Textile Design course students. The module included four subjects: Fashion Design, Textile Design, Digital Design and Development of Clothing Patterns.

Students deepened their skills in pattern making, digital garment design, and virtual prototyping. They explored their own creativity during the transition from physical to digital and again back to physicalThey were encouraged to critically analyse and compare the final virtual and physical garments. The module started with a presentation on how digital design is shaping the fashion industry, the seminar about the A-line dress and Slovenian textile and clothing heritage (Mediterranean type of peasant costume from the 19th centuryand the seminar about prints and stripes as an artistic element - which were the cover themes for the module project.

The Personal Space within Physical and Virtual module comprises six key milestones, seamlessly blending manual and digital processes.

Starting with »Manual Pattern Development«, where you will learn about manual pattern-making techniques, you will create five styles on a scale of 1:4. Transitioning to the digital sphere, steps two to five focus on digital design principles. In Step 2 you will work on digitally prepared prints and embroidery and in Step 3 you learn about CLO3D. Step 4 »Digital Pattern Cutting« will guide you through the same techniques you created in Step 1 (manually). However, this time in the virtual environment using CLO3D. In Step 5 we work with various virtual materials, applying our embroideryes and prints.

The last step is a combination of manual and digital where we teach you how to prepare your virtual garment to be printed and made in the physical world. The steps are planned to be undertaken in specific order.
